About

A dictionary with an editor, not a comment section.

Cynicopedia contains 191 entries across 6 pillars. Not only words: the dynamics, the rituals, and the quiet absurdities that never got a name until somebody needed one. Every entry was written, read and re-written by a human being who has sat through the meeting being described. That is the entire product.

Open dictionaries fail in an entirely predictable way. The first hundred entries are funny, the next thousand are variations on the same joke, and the one after that is spam. The voice is the only thing here that is worth protecting, and a voice cannot survive an unmoderated upload button.

Not every entry is doing the same job, so each one is filed by stance. Some phrases are bafflegab we ridicule. Some are euphemisms we decode. Some are diagnoses we agree with and want to define properly. And some are coinages: there was no phrase for the thing, so we supplied one.

So the Entry Studio will let you write an entry, preview it, download it as a card, and post it wherever you like. It will not put it on this site. If you want it in the lexicon, send it to the editor. Most of it will be edited. Some of it will be rejected. That is what curation means.

Four stances

The label on every entry tells you which side of the joke the phrase is on.

Bafflegab

The phrase means nothing. We are ridiculing it.

Euphemism

The phrase hides something specific. We decode it.

Diagnosis

The phrase already names a real problem. We define it properly.

Coinage

There was no phrase for this. We supplied one.

The four rules

01

Attack the behaviour, never the person

No named individuals, no protected groups, no punching down. The target is always the system, the phrase, or the absurdity itself. If a joke needs a victim to land, it is not a joke.

02

The definition is played straight

Write it like a technical specification. Mock-serious, precise, slightly over-formal. The comedy comes from the gap between the register and the subject.

03

The real meaning is the punchline

One sentence. Blunt. What a human would actually say if the polite version were illegal. This is the line people screenshot.

04

Specificity beats volume

A definition that could apply to anything is not funny. It has to describe one recognisable moment with uncomfortable accuracy.

What this is not

It is satire. It is not HR advice, legal advice, career advice, or a diagnosis. No entry describes a real, identifiable person, and none of it should be read as a factual claim about any company or individual. If you recognise your own workplace in here, that is a coincidence produced by the astonishing uniformity of workplaces.

Write it in the Entry Studio first — you will get a live preview and a card. If it still holds up after that, send it over.
